GENESIS and Barlovento invited us to share some of the work we are currently carrying out on the island’s water resources as part of World Water Day 2025: discussing the present and future of water on La Palma.
El 21 de marzo de 2025, AIM took part in the event organised by the La Palma Island Water Council to mark World Water Day, held at the Casa Principal de Salazar in Santa Cruz de La Palma. Iván Hernández Ríos, director of AIM, took part in one of the presentations and in the closing round-table discussion to share some of the work carried out as part of the project GENESIS and discuss the water resources of Barlovento and some of the challenges involved in managing them.
Alongside Raquel Martín Ferraz, from the Barlovento Union of Channels, and Alejandro García Gil, from the IGME-CSIC, Iván took part in the presentation “The evolution of water resources in Barlovento: yesterday, today and tomorrow. A case study from the GENESIS project”.
Through the case study of Barlovento, we were able to highlight some of the work we are carrying out at GENESIS and discuss how water resources in this part of the island have evolved. The presentation also touched on some of the issues discussed during the conference, such as climate change, irrigation, changes in river flows, water quality and groundwater.
The morning concluded with a round-table discussion on water management in La Palma in the face of climate change, in which Iván also took part alongside other professionals from the sector. It was an opportunity to continue discussing the changes we are already observing and how we can adapt the management of our water resources to the challenges ahead.
