A meeting to gain an in-depth understanding of how geothermal energy is being utilised in the Canary Islands and other European regions.
On 1 and 2 July 2026, from the Association for Research on Macaronesia (AIM) we took part in the Canary Islands meeting of the project in Vilaflor, Tenerife GREET GEO. Around 30 participants met in person to discuss the future of geothermal energy in the Canary Islands and to share experiences amongst public authorities, research centres, companies and other stakeholders linked to the sector.
One of the topics that was most relevant to our work was the relationship between geothermal energy, energy and water. During the conference, we learnt about various possibilities for the Canary Islands, ranging from shallow geothermal systems to deep geothermal projects, and gained an insight into initiatives already underway both on the islands and in other parts of Europe.
There was also time to head out into the field and gain a slightly better understanding of the volcanic context in which these solutions are being proposed. The visit to Teide National Park allowed us to round off those two days by seeing first-hand the relationship between Tenerife’s geological features and its geothermal potential.
We returned from Tenerife with a slightly better understanding of a field we are still only just beginning to explore and, above all, with a much clearer idea of what is already being done with geothermal energy in the Canary Islands and the potential it may hold for our islands.
